Old miles, new stories — outside Palmetto Running Company.

Every so often, someone drops off a pair of running shoes in our recycling bin that makes us stop and smile.

This week, it was an original New Balance 1906 — a shoe that first hit the roads around 2010 and was once considered one of New Balance's premium daily trainers. It had clearly done its job. The tread was worn. The cushioning had seen better days. But instead of ending up in a landfill, it found its way into our shoe recycling program — giving us the perfect opportunity to look back at how much running shoes have evolved over the last 15 years.

Then and now — the recycled 1906 alongside a current New Balance model.

Running Shoes Have Changed More Than You Think

Back in 2010, running shoes were built differently. Brands focused on adding structure, stability, and durability. Shoes like the New Balance 1906 featured layered synthetic overlays, breathable mesh, visible cushioning systems, and supportive midsoles designed to handle hundreds of training miles. At the time, it was cutting-edge.

Fast forward to today, and many of the technologies runners now expect didn't even exist yet. Modern shoes are lighter, softer, and far more efficient than their predecessors.

Then vs. Now

Walking through our store, it's hard not to notice the difference. Today's running shoes feature innovations like:

  • Lightweight engineered mesh uppers that eliminate unnecessary weight while improving breathability
  • High-energy foams that provide softer landings while returning more energy with every step
  • Rocker geometries that help create smoother heel-to-toe transitions
  • Wider, inherently stable platforms that provide confidence without relying on heavy stability posts

Take a look at just a few examples of where New Balance is today:

"Every pair that gets dropped off represents someone's running journey. When those shoes reach the end of their life, they don't have to end up in the trash."

Every Pair Has a Story

The thing that stood out wasn't just how old the 1906 was. It was obvious someone had trusted those shoes for hundreds of miles. Training runs. Weekend long runs. Maybe a first race. Maybe several.

That's what we love about our recycling program. Every pair that gets dropped off represents someone's running journey — and when those shoes reach the end of their life, they don't have to end up in the trash. They can be responsibly recycled while making room for the next chapter.
